Tick Tock: Man-Style Watches

I am loving man-style watches at the moment. Who wants a little dainty watch when you can get a show-stopping look-at-me watch! I always find myself browsing for watches in the mens section instead of the womans section. I also ‘borrow’ my husband’s DKNY watch every once in a while. It is amazing – stainless steel with a large square face and black background. When I mean borrow, I mean it now lives in my jewellery draw! I also have a guess watch that I wear almost everyday – stainless steel with large round face, white/silver background and bling around the face and down the band, LOVE! Why save a good watch for a special occasion? If you love it – wear it! You have to get your money’s worth!

My justification for everything I buy is if I get $1 for every time I wear it and it eventually evens out to what I paid for it, it’s a bargain! Who can’t afford $1 per wear? There are 365 days in a year and most watches have a warranty on them so if you wear it everyday for a whole year it should pretty much pay for itself right!?

Guess, DKNY and Nixon are my favourite brands for mens watches. Here are a few of my favourites:

Die for Tie-Dye

Ever put a load of washing on and pulled it out to find that a red sock has been smuggled in there turning all your washing a hideous colour? It’s definitely happened to me. I have a solution that might fix this if it happens and will make your clothing wearable again – tie-dye! That’s right, it’s no longer that weird hippy craze and it’s easy and cheap! I’m telling you that this trend is making a come-back. So start being the trend-setter you want to be and get your DIY gear ready. My personal favourite tie-dye wardrobe would consist of a tie-dye maxi dress, tie-die T-Shirt (teamed with jeans and plain coloured vest with boho-chic jewellery), tie-dye scarf (can also be worn as a headband) and leggings – obviously not worn together all at once!

What you need:
– clean piece of clothing you want to tie-dye.
– rubber gloves
– rubber bands or string
– tap water
– Fabric dye (try spotlight or lincraft).

What to do:
– Saturate
your fabric with water and wring out any excess water. This will allow the dye to distribute evenly.
– Start by wrapping rubber bands or tying string around your fabric according to the design you wish to achieve. Remember that the tighter you tie the string or rubber bands, the less dye will be able to reach the fabric. The fabric will not dye wherever the rubber bands or string are.
– Prepare your dye according to package directions. Make sure you wear your rubber gloves to protect your hands.
– Once your piece of clothing is ready, place the fabric into a dye bath as per the instructions of your dye. The longer the fabric remains in the dye, the darker and deeper the color will become.
– Remove the fabric from the dye and rinse in cold running water until the water runs clear.
– Carefully remove rubber bands to reveal your very own one-of-a-kind tie-dye design!

Die for Tie-Dye

Remember:
– Hot water will shrink cotton, so I would recommend you choose a cold dye.
– Dye won’t take well to polyester, so cotton is your best option.
– Read
the instructions on the die packet.
– Practice on a piece of scrap fabric first. You don’t want to ruin anything special.

Designs to try:
– Stripes: Gather fabric into a tube-like shape. You can twist it for lots of white wrinkles, or leave it as is. Or you can fold into a fan or accordian style. Strap rubber bands all the way down the tube or fan. The more rubber bands you add, the more white stripes you will have when finished.
Many Small Circles: For lots of small circles, pinch up fabric and tie it off with a thick rubber band or string.
Spiral: For a spiral design, pinch up a section in the middle of your fabric and twist it. Continue twisting until you have a spiral. Lay the spiral down onto the fabric and curl the rest of the fabric around it like a tight nest. Take two large rubber bands and secure the nest so that it stays put.

Happy tie-dying dolls!

Tied up in Braids

I am L-O-V-I-N-G the braid in a major way. I loved it so much that I had all my bridesmaids at my wedding wear a braided hairstyle. The style was based on Jessica Alba’s hairstyle. Since I got married a heap of my school friends have made their bridesmaids wear a braid as well. I’m so glad I got married before them so I could be the first one!

Ever since I first saw Ever After with Drew Barrymore I would sit in front of my mirror for hours trying to perfect the braided look. I’m still not very good at it and usually need someone else to do it for me!

Tied Up in Braids

The braid really makes a statement – it’s something different and you can work it anyway you want. You can wear braids in different ways to create different styles including bohemian, hippy, preppy, pretty, sophisticated, elegant or even rocker-chick.

Bows before Hoes

I am loving the ‘Bow’ at the moment. There are so many different styles and colours that anyone can find one to suit them. You can try a headband with a pretty sophisticated bow – think Blair from Gossip Girl or Alice in Wonderland, or a brightly coloured bow teamed with messy bed hair to create a rocker look or for the more daring a massive bow in front of a high ponytail.

If a Bow isn’t for you, why not try to make a bow with you actual hair instead! Here are a few of my favourites:

Bows before Hoes

Lady Gaga is obviously a major bow lover as is Paris Hilton. I am loving Leighton Meester from Gossip Girl.  She is classy and sophisticated and totally rocks the headband with Bow look. Also think Lauren Conrad’s bow is simple yet amazing – and I love her! Katy Perry shows off her quirky side with a massive bow and Zooey Deschanel shows off her eclectic style by tying a ribbon into a bow and wearing it as a headband. Kelly Osborne is more subtle with a smaller bow clip however she still manages to hold onto her rocker-chick image. Rihanna has even jumped on board.

I definitely know what’s on my shopping list this week!

David & Camy’s Noodle Restaurant

I went out with my sister and friend on Saturday night. My sister recommended this chinese place in Box Hill called David & Camy’s Noodle Restaurant so we decided to check it out.

It is a little chinese place that isn’t much when you walk in – but the food is AH-MAZ-ING! It is also so cheap! We ordered 15 steamed pork with chives dumplings (that’s right – 15. Yum!), plate of noodles (HUGE!), plate of broccoli with oyster sauce (HUGE! – can’t forget the vegies!), 7 pumpkin cakes (DIE!) and drinks. Total $34.50 and we split it between the 3 of us. That is absolutely crazy cheap!

It was so delicious I will definitely go back again.

Stila Illuminating Finishing Powder $69.00

It was pay day yesterday and I went shopping last night and blew pretty much the lot! I just can’t help myself. If I have any money in my wallet I just have to spend it straight away. I have enough for dinner of Saturday night with a few friends so I won’t get in too much trouble (hopefully!) – if it’s any good I’ll blog about it next week!

I was on the lookout for a new bronzer. I bought one years ago from Napoleon Perdis and thought it was great until I saw pictures of myself. It was bright orange – Yuck! No matter what I did I couldn’t blend it. So I sort of avoided bronzers after that and decided to stick to cream blushes and highlighters in peaches and pinks. I’ve also never ventured back to Napoleon Perdis. I have had quite a few bad makeup experiences when using their products. I had a white shimmer dust shadow that turned blue half way through the night – ewww! My eyes are hazel and blue just makes me look like Mimi from the Drew Carey Show – not a good look! I think that there are much better quality products out there for much cheaper.

So back to my search for the perfect bronzer. Most of the ones I’ve seen lately are too orange for my complexion. So I went to Mecca Cosmetica, my favourite cosmetics store. I saw the Stila Illuminating Finishing Powder and instantly fell in love with the Bronze shade.

Stila Illuminating Finishing Powder $69.00

It is a modern shimmer with a warm bronze look that has an illuminating powder finish. It is so silky and smooth. Each shade has been developed to be worn on all skin types. I just sweep over my foundation and my face literally glows!

Each shade is gorgeous and if I didn’t have similar colours already I wouldn’t have been able to choose!
